Initially built as a reservoir for the Vosges Canal, the Bouzey site is now a place of leisure and relaxation. Distance : 29 km Level : medium. Itinerary marked out by the department: follow the signs: "itinerary heritage n°9". Starting point : Chaumousey, crossroads of the cycle track and the meadow path From your starting point, leave the bicycle route and take the road to Darnieulles. In the Middle Ages, Darnieulles was the chief town of a barony. 1) Its castle is one of the oldest in the Vosges. Dismantled in the 18th century, you will pass by its ruins 2) In Uxegney, you will pass in front of the Saint-Romaric church, but you will discover above all an impressive fort, dating from 1882 built by General Séré de Rivières. The fort has been taken over by a dynamic association which organizes many guided tours. You will discover a large number of equipment still in place. On several occasions, this itinerary will take you along the Vosges Canal, dug between 1872 and 1882, to re-establish French river links following the annexation of Alsace and the Moselle by Germany. For almost a century, it was a real economic artery of the territory, generating the installation of numerous factories and companies along its route and leading to an economic and demographic boom of the territory. 3) A little further on, in Sanchey, you can discover a work similar to the Uxegney fort: the Sanchey battery. Built between 1881 and 1883, it is also part of the fortified complex of the Place d'Épinal. It has an exceptional drawbridge in working order, activated during the European Heritage Days. 4) Shortly after, you will arrive at the Plan d'Eau de Bouzey. Built between 1878 and 1884 to serve as a reservoir for the Vosges canal. It has also become a very popular leisure area, with supervised swimming areas (in season), pedal boat rental, a walking circuit and panels on the local flora and fauna. Option : 5) Those who wish to do so can make a small detour in the heart of the forest to discover the pond of the Countess, a place protected under the ENS (Espaces Naturels Sensibles). Indeed, the upstream part of the pond shelters a peat bog of great ecological and landscape value 6) On the other side of the lake was the great Abbey of Chaumousey, which radiated over the area during the Middle Ages. Totally destroyed, only a few isolated remains remain. 7) On the road to Girancourt, you will discover the Croix des Brûlées. According to ancient traditions, this cross is located on the spot where alleged witches were immolated between 1550 and 1630. In Girancourt, your route will lead you to the church of Saint-Brice, built between 1720 and 1722. Following the canal, you will return to your starting point.
