A protected natural area classified as "Natura 2000", the marsh covers the southern half of the commune of Villeneuve-en-Retz. With a total surface area of around 35,000 hectares, it now stretches from the Port du Collet in Les Moutiers-en-Retz, through the villages of Bourgneuf, Saint Cyr and Fresnay, to the gates of Machecoul, and further south, to the forest of Monts.
