LE VILLAGE DE LA SICAUDAIS

France > Pays de la Loire > Loire-Atlantique > 44320 > Chaumes-en-Retz > Arthon-en-Retz #### La Sicaudais

The village of La Sicaudais was created in the 19th century, according to the wishes of one person: Miss Victoire du Tressay de La Sicaudais, who drew up the plan and financed the church and the presbytery.

The Sicaudais depends on the town of Arthon-en-Retz which became in 2016: Chaumes-en-Retz (merger of Arthon-en-Retz and Chéméré). In the village of La Petite Sicaudais, there was once a castle of which only a recently restored chapel remains. The castle of the lordship of La Sicaudais and its private chapel are mentioned in 1119. In 1587, the lord of La Sicaudais received at his table the future king Henry IV. La Sicaudais has a modest church, where 20 inhabitants massacred during the Vendée wars are buried under the altar Meaning of the coat of arms of La Sicaudais Quarterly: in the first, of gules to the golden pitcher, in the chief of silver to three ermine spots of sable; in the second, of azure to the silver bell tower; in the third, of azure to the chestnut tree also of silver; in the fourth, of gules to the golden feather put in bar; on the whole, in banner, of gold to the cross of sable. Comments: The jug is a reminder of the many potters in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. The bell tower represents the memorial of the Resistance (following the southern pocket of Saint-Nazaire) in 1945. The chestnut tree evokes the one under which King Henry IV rested. The feather was previously a palm evoking the patron saint of the parish, Saint Victory. The central escutcheon represents the blazon of the country of Retz: gold with a cross of sand, recalling the belonging of La Sicaudais to it. The ermine spots evoke the plain ermine blazon of Brittany, recalling the past belonging of the city to the duchy of Brittany. Coat of arms designed by Paul Masson.
