CIRCUIT DE LA CAMPAGNE

In the ancient fortified town of Prigny, step back in time and stroll through the narrow streets surrounded by small stone houses. Thanks to its strategic position, the town was an "oppidum" during the Roman conquest. It was used to keep an eye on the Roman roads, both on land and at sea. Perched on this hilltop, the Chapelle de Prigny (11th century) is a veritable historical gem, bearing witness to the history of the town and the Pays de Retz. Stop for a moment and look out over the Baie de Bourgneuf and the Breton marshes. Take a stroll along the narrow lanes surrounded by vines, where the landscape changes with the seasons, and guess which grape varieties are grown... Look through your binoculars: the marsh and the sea are less than a kilometer away. As you walk along the Lyarne marsh, you'll be able to take a deep breath and smell the iodized sea air. If you're lucky, you might even spot a flock of birds... As you pass through the village, push open the door of the Eglise Saint Pierre and discover its treasure: a listed altarpiece dating from the 17th century. In front of the church stands the Lanterne de Morts, a rare structure and the last working one in France. Along the way, you'll learn why the town's slogan is "la mer à la campagne" ("the sea in the countryside"). Departure from Prigny or Place du Général de Gaulle.
