CIRCUIT DES COTEAUX DE LA MONTAGNE

The commune dominates the Loire Valley, perched on its balcony. It shares with the neighbouring commune a small undulating forest to discover: the Bois des Fous.

The Circuit de La Montagne offers a great diversity of landscapes and conceals many curiosities. Accessible to the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest, this walk will allow you to dominate the Loire Valley At a glance, you will see Cheviré, Haute-Indre and Basse-Indre. A little further on, you will cross the Bois des Fous. The origin of its name would come from faou which means "beech" in Breton. This wood has many species: beech, oak, chestnut, cherry, poplar, birch and a few maple trees. In spring, wild flowers brighten up the undergrowth. Another remarkable feature: the Château d'Aux. The Chevalier d'Aux de Bournay entrusted the construction of this vast residence to the famous architect Ceineray from 1769 onwards. Monsieur d'Aux got his fortune from the pineapple plantations he owned in Santo Domingo. The Revolution sounded the death knell for this magnificence. In 1791, the garrison settled in the ruined lord's castle to protect the cannon foundry of Indret. Today, the castle has become a Children's Home. A little further on, between La Montagne and Bouguenais, you will discover the village of Roche-Balue, whose port experienced an important activity from the 14th century. Roche-Balue is conducive to daydreaming, and its alleys, to bewilderment. Let yourself get lost and dream for a few moments in front of the small port: with a bit of luck, you will witness the arrival of a boat.
