MOULIN PENDU DE CHAMPTOCEAUX

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49530 > Orée d'Anjou > Le Cul du Moulin - CHAMPTOCEAUX

Last water mill on the Loire. This 13th century historic monument between Angers and Nantes was part of a vast fortified complex now in ruins. Technically, its wheels were hung and adjusted to the changing level of the river.

Classified as a historical monument, this 13th century building was first presented as a river toll before being rehabilitated as a water mill. Under the pointed arches were suspended paddle wheels that drove the millstones on the first floor, hence the name "hanging mill". This mill is contemporary with the medieval town, of which there are still vestiges on the heights. The hanging mill is located at the place called "le Cul du Moulin" at the foot of Champtoceaux, near the landing stage of the boat "La Luce" and the nautical base L.A Kayak 1km away, the remains of the citadel of Châteauceaux plunge you into the medieval history of the city.
