PONT GALLO ROMAN

France > Pays de la Loire > Loire-Atlantique > 44330 > Mouzillon > Rue du Pont Gallo Romain

The Gallo-Roman bridge, a stage on the Rouen-Ancenis-Bordeaux Celtic route.

It is one of the curious antiques of the Pays Nantais region. | | It is sometimes referred to as the Gallo-Roman bridge or the Julius Caesar bridge, on the pretext that the Roman general used an earlier bridge intended solely for pedestrians. | | Some remains of the ancient Roman road from Ancenis to Clisson can be found near the bridge. It actually dates from the Romanesque period (7th century) and features 4 unequal arches. Each pier is flanked by a spur. Downstream, this spur does not rise to the deck, but rather rises above it, giving it a very special appearance and making it unique in the West. It was partly restored in the Middle Ages. An ogival arch is proof of this. | | It was listed as a Historic Monument by decree dated May 14, 1925 | Following flooding in 2014-2015, which weakened the bridge, it was completely restored in 2018 and now provides a safe, pedestrian crossing.
