LES REMPARTS ET LA PORTE BEUCHERESSE

France > Pays de la Loire > Mayenne > 53000 > Laval > Place Hardy de Lévaré

The Porte Beucheresse is one of the gates, still visible, of the fortified enclosure erected in the 13th century around Laval.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the development of the city prompted it to equip itself with its own fortification system. More than 1100 metres long, this enclosure was flanked by 27 towers and pierced by 3 porte cochères (including the Porte Beucheresse) and 2 posterns. In the 15th century, the restoration of the city walls following the passage of the English is accompanied by the development of a parapet walk on machicolation crowning the curtain walls. The fortifications suffered major destruction during the major urban works of the 19th century. The Beucheresse Gate, the Anne d'Allègre walkway (built in the moat of the southern rampart) and the northern rampart (including the Renaise Tower) have been preserved.
