EGLISE SAINT PIERRE DE CHANZEAUX

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49120 > Chemillé-en-Anjou > Place de l'Eglise #### CHANZEAUX

The church of Chanzeaux and its 13th century bell tower bear witness to the painful episodes experienced by the population during the Vendée wars.

The square tower of the bell tower is all that remains of the old church, largely burnt down during the Revolution and rebuilt in 1898-1899 in the neo-Romanesque style It is voluntarily preserved at that time in memory of the "martyrdom" of its 28 defenders in front of 2000 "blue" soldiers, on April 9, 1795 Don't miss the stained glass window of the Communion of the Coulée de Fruchaud, the largest of the 75 stained glass windows in the rebuilt church, as well as the remarkable wall paintings which colour this bright and clear church and illustrate what happened at Chanzeaux during the Vendée Wars.
