L'HYROME SAUVAGE

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49750 > Val-du-Layon

One of the wildest valleys in the department, sheltered by its steep hillsides. The contrast is striking with the plateau where the rows of vines of the famous "coteaux du Layon" line up as far as the eye can see.

The descent is gradual... After the Maison de la nature, the fishing pond, the campsite, the old water treatment plant, you plunge into the deepest part of the Hyrôme valley, secret and wild. The river meanders between old ash trees and runs over granite boulders. At the old bridge, approach gently to surprise the Kingfisher or the Wagtail of the brooks. The path gradually goes up the slopes, you leave the cool tranquility of the river for the Mediterranean scents of the hillsides. Boxwood and holm oak gradually colonize the hottest slopes. The Sedum, Oregano and Mountain Jasione are found on the rocky outcrops where the superb green lizard is basking in the sun. The return journey is made by going up the hillside, which was built in homage to the wars of the Vendée. On the wine-growing plateau, you can see, on the horizon, the great Layon fault and the slopes of the Pont Barré reserve. Between the rows of vines, the vegetation is very different according to the type of maintenance used (Muscaris, Erodium, Orchids...).
