EGLISE SAINT GEORGES À GESNES

France > Pays de la Loire > Mayenne > 53150 > Gesnes > place de l'église

Romanesque style, rebuilt in 1875 to the plans of an Irish architect, Hawke, which explains the presence of a honeycombed bell tower and the presence of Celtic crosses.

It was also in the 19th century that the church square was redesigned: the cemetery surrounding the old church of Romanesque origin was moved to the outskirts of the village. Tombstones can still be seen in the square along a linden-lined avenue and under the 18th century baptismal font inside the church. The three stained glass windows that decorate the choir of the church dedicated to St Georges are also worth noting. They were made at the beginning of the 20th century by the Lorin workshop in Chartres.
