During the Hundred Years' War, it was from Le Tertre-Ganne that English bombing batteries breached the ramparts. In the 1950s, the site did not look wooded. Until then, it was a stone quarry. Legend has it that the Tertre-Ganne came from Gannelon, former companions of Charlemagne, whose treachery is recounted in Roland's song.
