Brulon - Cité natale de Claude Chappe

France > Pays de la Loire > Sarthe > 72350 > Brûlon > Place Albert Liébault

Brûlon has developed for twenty centuries around the site of the feudal clod, which hides a real historical mille-feuille. Its streets and houses contain medieval remains from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Romanesque church and its priory rebuilt in the 15th century.

Birthplace of Claude CHAPPE, inventor of the telegraph, Brûlon has a heritage rich in history. A vast feudal mound in the centre of the town hides many remains dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, including a Merovingian necropolis and several lost castles. Several streets dating from the medieval village are now lined with houses of character, from the 15th to 18th centuries, including the birthplace of the Chappe brothers, inventors of the optical telegraph in the revolutionary era. Self-guided visit thanks to Guidigo. A free guidebook for a visit of Brûlon is available every day at the tourist office. Possibility of guided tours of the town on request. The Romanesque church of Brûlon is open to visit every day and a guidebook is available inside. The commune of Brûlon is equipped with a leisure centre with a lake, and numerous leisure facilities (Skate and BMX, basketball, handball, cross-country and mountain biking, canoeing, archery etc...) not to mention the Indian tipi camp "Bonheur de Vivre".
