CHÂTEAU DE MONTREUIL-BELLAY

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49260 > Montreuil-Bellay > Place des Ormeaux

The Castle of Montreuil-Bellay, with its 15 defensive towers and its 600 meters of ramparts, looks like an impregnable fortress!

The feudal castle of Montreuil-Bellay was built around 1025. The barbican, the moat and the fortified ramparts, the vaulted underground passageways, the kitchen with a central fireplace, all vestiges of the Middle Ages, should be seen from this period. Then the lords flanked the fortress with elegant buildings based on large vaulted cellars dating from the 15th century. The new castle and the collegiate church, the canons' dwelling and the drying rooms (exhibitions) date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle is fully furnished. It is also a wine property where you will discover the vintages. As an option to your visit of the castle, go to the heart of the entrails of the fortress during an unusual guided tour. From the barbican, to the moat topped by the ramparts, you will discover not only the unique military architecture of this place but also the story of memorable battles that illustrate the millenary history of the castle. The duration of this tour is 45 minutes, in addition to the self-guided tour (Adults: entrance fee +4 € / Children: entrance fee +3 €). Reservations are recommended.
