Durtal was born on a rocky promontory, a strategic place at the crossroads of major roads and the Loir In 1050 the 1st fort was built, then 4 centuries later, a new castle was built on the same site: The Royal Castle of Durtal, a remarkable example of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. A real palace-fortress and strategic lock overlooking the Loir Valley where many kings of France have stayed. History tells us that it was here that the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre was carried out. The proud Castle of the Counts of Anjou still protects the town of Durtal, nestled under its walls.
