Circuit des églises romanes

France > Pays de la Loire > Sarthe > 72300 > Sablé-sur-Sarthe

This tour presents a large number of Romanesque churches a very interesting architectural heritage that was built as early as the 11th or 12th century and then enlarged or modified in the following centuries.

This rich terroir is called Champagne Mancelle for the quality of the limestone soils and its slightly undulating relief. It borders the Charnie river which was originally a large wooded area. In the Middle Ages, Maine was often coveted by its Angevin or Norman neighbours, then it was integrated into the Plantagenets Empire during the 12th century. The Romanesque churches built at this time often benefited from the techniques used for the great buildings of Le Mans, but also have Norman or Angevin influences For most of these buildings there are proportions in the construction and a rule governing the thickness of the choir walls in the 12th century. Explanatory panels and leaflets are present in buildings of great interest: Pirmil, Longnes, Neuvy-en-Champagne, Tennie. The Romanesque Churches circuit is in the form of an 8 with a start at Loué (southern loop 43 km) and the other at Brûlon (northern loop 69 km), with a 130 m difference in altitude.
