Near the Cité Plantagenêt, collections of Italian, Flemish, Dutch and French paintings from the 15th to the 19th century, furniture, sculptures, objets d'art. Egyptian gallery.
The Musée de Tessé, in Le Mans, occupies the site of the former estate of the Tessé family, whose collections form part of the old collection. The permanent exhibitions, spread over two levels, present paintings, sculptures and objets d'art from the 12th to the 19th and 20th centuries. The highlights are "Le sommeil d'Elie" and "La vanité" by Philippe de Champaigne, "La nature morte aux armures" by Willem Van Aelst, Louis XV's secretary and the very original paintings illustrating Scarron's "Roman comique". In 2001, a vast underground space dedicated to Pharaonic Egypt was inaugurated. It contains life-size reconstructions of the tombs of Queen Nofretari, wife of Ramses II and Sennefer, mayor of Thebes The Egyptian gallery was renovated in 2018.
