Former fortress at the gates of Maine, the Donjon de Ballon, a Historic Monument, is a witness of the Middle Ages-Renaissance architecture. Its gardens, inspired by the same period, present botanical collections and an exceptional view.

The Donjon de Ballon has stood on a rocky spur facing Normandy for over 1000 years. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1923, the Keep has been restored since 1960 by the A'Weng Guéroult family. The gardens, of medieval and Renaissance inspiration, classified as Remarkable Gardens, include an enclosed garden inside the curtain walls composed of medicinal, dyeing or culinary plants surrounded by boxwood borders and topiaries - An orchard of botanical fruit trees - A rose garden of more than 100 old roses, shrub peonies and clematis. An exceptional panorama allows a view of the Saosnois on more than 30 Kms. A major tourist site in Sarthe open on weekends in May and June from 2.30 to 6.30 pm. Open for Jardin Art et Soin on 21 and 22 June.
