Eglise Saint-Etienne

France > Centre-Val de Loire > Indre > 36100 > Brives > Rue du Château

Built between 1875 and 1881 in a neo-gothic style, the church of Saint-Etienne has a facade dominated by a beautiful ashlar bell tower surmounted by a portal decorated with capitals of foliage and fantastic animals.

Inside, the nave is vaulted with ribbed vaults and the arms of the transept, covered with ridges, house two chapels. A polychrome statue represents Saint Anthony the Hermit with a book, a bell and a pig. Outside the church, there is a granite cross (15th century) representing Christ on the main side and the standing Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus on the back. The chamfered square base in the upper part has the peculiarity of having a lectern of stone cut in one piece in the middle seat. A font (15th century), which is not part of the ensemble, is placed in front.
