The town, situated on the Roman road from Orléans to Sens, belonged to the royal abbey of Saint-Denis in the Middle Ages. The Saint-Martin church and the Saint-Pipe crypt of Beaune-la-Rolande bear witness to this prestigious past.
The first church of Beaune was built in the 12th century. It was burnt down during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453). The church was rebuilt once peace had returned, giving it a gothic orientation.
