France > Centre-Val de Loire > Loiret > 45230 > Saint-Maurice-sur-Aveyron > Fontainejean

Fontainejean Abbey was a 12th century French Cistercian abbey. Only the remains of the abbey remain. They were listed as historical monuments on 6 October 1925.

Founded in 1124, it is the eighth Cistercian abbey of Pontigny. The abbey church, restored by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, was devastated during the French Revolution. In 1834, only four pillars and a large ogival archway remained of the church, which eventually collapsed around 1862. The abbey house was finally destroyed in 1840. The ruins of the old church still contain a gate from the abbey, three of the marble columns from the Courtenay tomb and relics of the saints. The remains of this abbey were listed as a historical monument on 6 October 1925.
