This is the southern gate of Marvejols, the one that leads to the route du Midi, towards Millau. It used to be called "Porte de l'Hôpital" because of the nearby Hôpital Saint-Jacques.
This is the southern gateway to Marvejols, leading onto the Route du Midi towards Millau. It used to be called Porte de l'Hôpital, after the nearby Hôpital Saint-Jacques. From inside the town, it's easy to see how the walls were filled with river pebbles when the gates were fitted out for habitation in the 18th century. To this end, windows had to be cut into the towers to the south. At the top, as in a real house, there's an attic window with a pulley. Today, the Porte Chanelle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside
