EGLISE SAINT-JEAN - SERVERETTE

France > Occitanie > Lozère > 48700 > Serverette > D806

This beautiful Romanesque building (recently restored) can be found a few kilometers from Serverette, off the D806 in the direction of Rieutort-de-Randon, surrounded by a cemetery. It was once the church of "La Bachellerie" (deformed into "Vachellerie"), from the name of the village located at the time around the Romanesque church of Saint-Jean.

The church is located near Serverette, off the D806 towards Rieutort-de-Randon. In the 12th century, the village of Serverette was located in Saint-Jean and was called La Vachellerie built around its Romanesque church. It was ravaged by the Protestants. In ruins in 1650, it was restored. The looting and degradation during the Revolution were apparently the cause of the change of destination, the inhabitants left the valley to seek the protection of the powerful Château de Serverette Nowadays, the Romanesque church and the cemetery remain on the site of La Vachellerie. It is 24 m long and 6 m wide. The Romanesque portal with its bare arches is topped by a bay and framed by imposing buttresses that suggest the presence of a fallen bell tower. The interior offers a beautiful architectural ensemble. On the outside, the apse is rounded and unfolds its 5 semicircular arches. It should be noted that the site was recently restored thanks to a participative financing.
