EGLISE SAINT-JACQUES LE MAJEUR

The church of Chastanier is a 12th century Romanesque building dedicated to Saint Jacques le Majeur. It depended on the monastery of Langogne and was a stopover on the road to Compostela. Built in large granite stones, it has a bell-tower-wall, with two bays. The entrance porch consists of several pointed arch vaults added to the building in the 15th century. Inside, its nave is barrel vaulted and is divided into three bays. Its choir has a flat chevet and houses a beautiful altar with notable pink ornaments. The choir bay was added in the 15th century to replace the original Romanesque apse, of which remains can still be seen. Indeed, from the 12th century, only two engaged columns remain, bearing the first doubleau and the south walls pierced with windows.
