A French military hospital, the Alpine Ambulance treated wounded soldiers and civilians from 1915 to 1918. Now restored, it has become an interpretation centre on the war in the valley.

Discover a former French military hospital, which was used to treat wounded soldiers and civilians from 1915 to 1918. The Alpine Ambulance, now restored, has become an interpretation centre on the war in the valley since its opening on July 11, 2015. Volunteers will be on hand to guide you through the exhibit. Mittlach, the only village in the Munster Valley to become French again and remain French from 21 April 1915, became a French base a few kilometres from the front. From 15 to 21 June 1915, the Battle of Metzeral ravaged the entire valley floor before the front became established between the communes of Metzeral and Muhlbach. In July 1915, the commune's town hall-school was transformed into an aid post after the cellar walls were reinforced. The Alpine Ambulance takes in both military and civilian casualties and serves as a propaganda tool for the army's health service. Despite the decline in the intensity of the fighting, it was used throughout the war. Now restored, it is accompanied by an interpretation centre and a memorial trail on the theme of the impact of war on mankind, combatant or not.
