In 1894, a bronze statue of Hector Lemaine was erected in the beautiful square, where important cattle fairs were held in the past, in memory of the great constable. History tells us that the Constable Bertrand Du Guesclin laid siege to Châteauneuf-de-Randon at the end of June 1380, but he died on 13 July without being able to retake the place and it was over his coffin that the leader of the besieged, Pierre de Galard, handed the keys of the town to the Constable. According to tradition, Du Guesclin died because he drank, on a very hot day, water from the Glauze spring, which is located west of the city.
