Of this castle (13th century), only the keep and an enclosure flanked by a semi-circular bastion remain.

Hohenstein Castle, overlooking the entrance to the Bruche Valley, is located in the commune of Oberhaslach, some 40 kilometres from Strasbourg This 13th century castle was built on a rock at an altitude of 640m The site is a barred spur; little remains of the castle: to the north, one can see the unpainted stump of the keep that protected the house in a row. Between the moat that separates the site from the Great Ringelsberg Mountain and the keep lies the farmyard. An enclosure flanked by a semicircular bastion was later added. The construction is typical of the early 13th century in view of the site and the layout of the complex. The castle was built by the de Hohenstein family; the Bishop of Strasbourg was one of the co-owners at the end of the 13th century. Bishop Berthold de Bucheck was held prisoner there in 1337 by Rudolf de Hohenstein; on his release in 1338, he took the castle, which was never to rise from its ruins again.
