The history of the Wittschloessel seems to merge with the neighbouring Wineck Castle. It is said to have been destroyed in 1677. The remains (a surrounding wall and foundations on a small rocky bar), are rare in Wittschlœssel.
Former property of the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the medieval fortress welcomes hikers in the heart of the Vosges du Nord Regional Nature Park. Many walkers like to linger at the summit of the Wittberg, at an altitude of 444m.
