LE THOUREIL

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49350 > Gennes-Val-de-Loire > Le Thoureil

Emblematic of the Loire Valley, the old port of Thoureil evokes the golden age of inland waterway transport. The old bargemen's houses with their tufa facades and their picturesque silhouettes at the foot of the hillside. The village spreads out in a long string of houses on the Loire front. Until the 19th century, the history of these places was linked to the various river activities: transport and trade, water crossing, ferry mills, fishing, control and tolls... Inland shipping and wine trade had their "golden age" in the 17th and 18th centuries in Thoureil. Today, many testimonies remain of this period when the Loire was a merchant: small bargemen's dwellings, merchant's "comptoir", ceremonial tower, terraced gardens. Thanks to the heritage interpretation circuit, you will be able to appreciate the picturesque charm of the village as well as an exceptional panorama of the Loire as you stroll along the quays.
