This museum is dedicated to the only battle to take place on August 6, 1870. Known as the "Battle of Reichshoffen", it was actually the battle of Froeschwiller for the French army and Woerth for the German army. Found on the battlefield, most of the exhibits bear witness to this painful past for France. A diorama of over 4,000 pewter figurines retraces a moment in this battle in which so many valiant combatants distinguished themselves. While documents, paintings, postcards, etc., produced for the purposes of remembrance tourism, form an interesting part of the collection, firearms, edged weapons, uniforms, helmets, headgear, tools and the necessities of soldier's life make up the bulk. A French defeat that opened up the Vosges and thus Paris to the German coalition army, this battle resulted in the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. Guided tours in French, German and English in the museum and outside on the battlefield.
