VILLAGE DE MAUROUX

The old castelnau occupies the edge of a plateau surrounded by deep ravines carved by streams, giving it a mountainous appearance with a few troglodyte type houses below as well as a circular washhouse and a large watering place. This rocky promontory supports an ancient small town (listed as a historical monument since 1943) which was an archpriesthood and enjoyed a certain prosperity at a time when its tanneries worked for England. Of the castelnau, one finds the feudal mound, the vestiges of the castle, sections of fortified walls, beautiful 18th century houses, a covered passage As in many castelnaux, the parish church (Saint Pierre-Saint Paul) was built outside the walls in the 15th century and transformed in the 19th century with its porch bell tower. Nearby is the hamlet of Saint Martin de las Oumettes and the Ferme des étoiles with its astronomy activities.
