Eglise Saints-Pierre-et-Paul

France > Grand Est > Haut-Rhin > 68420 > Eguisheim > Place de l'église

Of the Romanesque church, rebuilt in Gothic style in 1220, only the bell tower with its gabled roof remains. Composed of 4 stories, it has Romanesque elements in its lower part, while the upper part is pierced by ogival geminated windows. The nave of the original church was demolished in 1807 and replaced by the present vast nave built in the "barn" style in 1808 and 1809. Inside, you can admire the splendid porch of the old church. The portal is dominated by the admirable tympanum representing Christ in majesty, blessing the earth, surrounded by Saints Peter and Paul. The scene below depicts the parable of the wise virgins and the foolish virgins. The portal also houses a polychrome wooden sculpture called "Opening Virgin". It opens by two leaves with the decoration of an angel. This work of art from the 13th-14th centuries is the only example of its kind in Alsace, along with that of Kaysersberg.
