Le Donon, montagne sacrée

France > Grand Est > Bas-Rhin > 67130 > Grandfontaine

At an altitude of 1009 m, the Massif du Donon is the highest point in the Lower Vosges, where the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine meet. Since prehistoric times, because it can be seen from afar, it has been considered a sacred site. Its remote location encouraged the development of legends, blending myth and reality. The Romans, mysteriously seduced, dedicated the site to Mercury. Feared by the first Christians, the Donon is said to have inspired Victor Hugo. Under Napoleon III, a successful pastiche of an ancient temple crowned the summit. You too can conquer the Donon! Take the archeological discovery trail, lined with commented drawings.
