Musée de la Chartreuse - Fondation Bugatti

The Musée de la Chartreuse is a must-see for the medieval town of Molsheim, located on the Alsace wine route some 20 km from Strasbourg. The museum is dedicated to archaeology, art and history. At the gateway to the Bruche valley, Molsheim has been a possession of the bishops of Strasbourg since the High Middle Ages. The town's heyday came after the Reformation, with the arrival of various religious orders, including the Jesuits (1580-1765) and the Carthusians (1598-1792). Then came the French Revolution. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Molsheim became a major industrial and craft center. This rich and varied history is presented, from the earliest traces of human occupation in the region (Paleolithic) to the painful memories of the Second World War. Several rooms are devoted to the town's medieval history, as well as to the religious orders established here before 1789. Souvenirs from the 19th century complete this evocation of Molsheim and the surrounding region, with a room devoted to the sculptor Philippe GRASS (1801-1876). The premises are home to the Bugatti Foundation, which perpetuates the memory of the brilliant carmaker Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947) through the presentation of a number of cars, unusual objects and documents. Don't leave without seeing the monastery buildings, including three reconstructed Carthusian monastery cells and the cloister currently being restored by volunteers. Part of the Carthusian monastery museum is accessible to people with reduced mobility (via ramps), as is the second room of the Bugatti foundation, which houses 2 vehicles. The first floor of the museum is not accessible.
