Eglise d'Urbeis

France > Grand Est > Bas-Rhin > 67220 > Urbeis > place de l'Europe

A first chapel seems to have existed in Urbeis as early as the 16th century. In 1665, a chapel "Saint Nicolas, at the top of the village" is reported, probably next to the old cemetery. A new building was erected in 1752 in the centre of the village, on the site of the current church. This small rectangular building, still dedicated to Saint Nicolas, was razed to the ground in 1789. The village built a new sanctuary before the troubles of the Revolution had reached the valley and used stones from the ruins of the Bilstein Castle for this purpose.
