Berges de l'Ohmbach

France > Grand Est > Haut-Rhin > 68570 > Soultzmatt

A small 9 km long stream, the Ohmbach and its water are the vital artery of Soultzmatt. Originally, it emerges from a limestone cave and is swollen with numerous brooks before being joined by the waters of the Blumensteinbach and then the Kaltenbach. It was domesticated from the 13th century onwards to provide energy for mills, sawmills, turning mills, carpentry and tannery, to fight fires, to irrigate the land, to transport wood and stones, to wash animals, for washing, for fishing, etc. It will supply water to up to fifteen mills, installed along its route. But in 1972, its whims are no longer supported downstream and it is diverted at the exit of the valley.
