The town of Fumay, with its strong slate culture, is home to a number of typical houses. Initially built in slate and Givet bluestone, brick and Dom stone (ochre limestone quarried in the Charleville-Mézières region) are also used. Rectangular shapes are another distinctive feature. At the beginning of the 20th century, L-shaped and T-shaped houses were built. Another typical feature of the Fumacian house is the cellar, which opens directly onto the ground, and the individual entrance door topped by a fanlight. LA FRESQUE DES "SCAILLETEUX":This was the name given to the men who extracted blocks of slate from the bottom and cut them into workable blocks. To perpetuate their memory, the town of Fumay commissioned artist G. A Favaudon to create a slate and concrete fresco on avenue Jean Jaurès.
