France > Hauts-de-France > Oise > 60200 > Compiègne > Place du Général de Gaulle

Transformed and enlarged under Louis XV then restored by Napoleon I after the Revolution, the Palais de Compiègne had its hour of glory thanks to Napoleon III. It hosted the greatest figures of Europe during the famous Series. Imperial apartments, restored to their original state.

The Castle of Compiègne is a high place of the court life and the exercise of the power. Built by Charles V, all the kings of France until Louis XIV stayed there, thus testifying of the importance of this place. Louis XV destroyed the original castle to better rebuild it, then Louis XVI continued its construction. It will be refurbished under Napoleon I and Napoleon III. The originality and beauty of the largest French neo-classical castle, the quality of its interior decorations and its furniture, make it a unique ensemble. Alongside Versailles and Fontainebleau, the Château de Compiègne is one of the three most important French royal and imperial residences. Classified as a historical monument, the Château de Compiègne offers visitors the discovery of the Royal and Imperial Apartments, as well as several museums: the Museum of the Second Empire, the Empress Museum, the National Car Museum and a park labeled "Remarkable Garden".
