One of the world's largest ossuaries lies beneath the cobblestones of the capital. Called "catacombs" in reference to the underground necropolises of ancient Rome, its galleries extend over a hundred kilometres and house the remains of nearly six million Parisians, collected as the cemeteries of Paris were closed. Opened to the public in 1809, it can be accessed from the Place Denfert-Rochereau, recognizable by the monumental replica of the Lion of Belfort statue.
