Église fortifiée Saint-Nicolas

France > Hauts-de-France > Aisne > 02340 > Noircourt > Rue de Rozoy

Although oral tradition and ancient monographs attest to the presence of a castle, very little remains today, including the 13th-century sanctuary of Saint Nicolas church. The latter was later fortified with a square keep, a tower with machicolation, loopholes and watchtowers... and so on. The two corbelled turrets on either side of the porch, in red brick and supported by buttresses, contrast with the whiteness of the bell tower. These 5 turrets provided a 270° firing angle. In the mid-sixties, Dutch artist Henk Beckman created a series of murals, frescoes and stained glass windows entitled "The Creation of the World", which we invite you to discover. You can also admire a marble high altar from the former Premonstratensian abbey of Chaumont-Porcien, in the Ardennes, and the oldest (17th century) confessional in Thiérache churches.
