Le Dragon de Mametz - Mémorial à la 38e Division galloise

France > Hauts-de-France > Somme > 80300 > Carnoy-Mametz > Mametz

Bypassing the "Fricourt Salient" to the south, the British 7th Division captured the village on the afternoon of 1 July 1916. But the name of Mametz remained linked to the woods to the north-east. Mametz Wood was a place of resistance and danger. The soldiers of Wales however recovered it on July 12, 1916 after 8 days of fierce fighting and at the price of very heavy losses. The Welsh path will lead you to the memorial. Inaugurated on 11 July 1987, the monument to the 38th Welsh Division is decorated with a red dragon, emblem of Wales. With its wings in motion, it holds barbed wire in its claws in the direction of Mametz Wood, recalling the fierce fighting.
