CHÂTEAU DE PUILAURENS

France > Occitanie > Aude > 11140 > Puilaurens > Route du château

A strategic site, perched at 697 m a.s.l. on Mont Ardu, Puilaurens castle stands on its rocky spur overlooking the village in the middle of a forest of fir trees. For 4 centuries, it was the most southern fortress in France, blocking access to the Fenouillèdes. It bears witness to a unique model of fortifications commanded by a central stronghold, the City of Carcassonne to defend a territory and the border with the Kingdom of Aragon in the 13th century. The adaptation of this fortress to the steep relief demonstrates the architectural prowess. It constitutes an impressive visual landmark in remarkable and preserved landscapes. From the welcome, the first stones are revealed! At the end of the path, the impressive chicane staircase rises, then the entrance door of the castle. Passing through the stun gate, the main courtyard is revealed. The surrounding wall and its crenellations, the towers open to the gorge are full of history. Last visit 20 minutes before closing time.
