France > Occitanie > Aude > 11590 > Sallèles-d'Aude > Allée des potiers

Amphoralis, a dozen kms north of the ancient capital Narbo Martius, is a former Gallic amphora production workshop, unearthed in 1976. Its museum overlooks the archaeological excavations of an ancient pottery factory (1st? 3rd century). It provides an insight into the daily life and activities of these potters, who not only mass-produced wine amphorae, but also various building materials (bricks, tiles) and everyday tableware. In the park, an outdoor trail leads to reconstructed kilns and a Gallo-Roman dwelling, built in the same style as the remains found. The potters? garden features more than 160 plant species catalogued by Latin agronomists. They are divided into 5 different uses: food, medicinal, condiment, ornamental and craft. A stroll through the arboretum reveals the types of wood used to fire potters? kilns. Open on the 1st Sunday of the month from January to April and from October to December (free admission).
