CHÂTEAU DE GOMBERVAUX

France > Grand Est > Meuse > 55140 > Vaucouleurs > Départementale 964

Gombervaux, an imposing 14th-century listed building, was strategically located on the border between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire. The presence of a nearby spring enabled the construction of a moat, which is still in place today. The imposing 22-meter tower-porch houses a portcullis and its wheelhouse, built during international volunteer workcamps in 2017 & 2018. The château has played an important role in the history of Lorraine: host of the 1367 banquet celebrating the attachment of Vaucouleurs to the Kingdom of France, home to French troops during the Thirty Years' War, barony under Louis XIV? it was not abandoned by its owners until 1763. It escaped the destruction of the French Revolution, but its gradual abandonment left it vulnerable to the ravages of time. Although a large part of the château has now disappeared, it remains a veritable showcase of medieval architecture in Lorraine. Indeed, having undergone only minor alterations, the buildings that remain today have retained their original appearance. Since 1989, thanks to the Gombervaux Association and its partners, this edifice has been enjoying a second lease of life, welcoming curious and enthusiastic visitors from all walks of life, as well as volunteers from all over the world to lend a hand in its restoration. Gombervaux is also a precious natural site: the Association works all year round to preserve the local flora and fauna. This mission is part of an approach to protecting the environment, for educational purposes and to raise awareness of ecology. Access to the site possible all year round. Tours of interiors on request for groups. Guided tours available in July and August. The site can be hired out for film shoots and other events.
