VILLAGE REMARQUABLE D'ARNAVILLE

France > Grand Est > Meurthe-et-Moselle > 54530 > Arnaville

A wine village on the Moselle coast. The plateaus surrounding the village, nestled in the bottom of the Rupt-de-mad valley, culminate at more than 300 m. In the 18th century, the vine was the main resource of the inhabitants of Arnaville. This village keeps an organization inherited from the medieval elders The aître or atrium designates a defensive and fortified community complex of medieval origin. Originally, the aître designated the cemetery, a place of asylum, then, by extension, the fortified village. The houses are grouped together in a horseshoe shape around the church. The aître was a place of refuge for the population but also for the food that could be stored in cellars.
