CHAPELLE SAINT-HIPPOLYTE

France > Grand Est > Moselle > 57570 > Basse-Rentgen > Haute-Rentgen #### Rue Saint Hippolyte

While passing through Haute-Rentgen, don't miss the Saint-Hippolyte chapel of 1765 and its double adjoining cross. This cross has an incredible history. Erected in 1480 by Captain Peter Blager in honour of his soldiers who fell in battle against the Lords of Rodemack, it almost disappeared during the French Revolution, as the revolutionary authorities imposed the destruction of all religious symbols in the department. The cross was buried and forgotten until the rediscovery of a peasant. Since then, the place where the cross was found has been called the "Garden of the Cross". The chapel also houses a curious Saint Hippolyte on a wooden horse from the 18th century, which is displayed every year in August, during the celebration of the blessing of the horses.
