CIRCUIT DU COL DE LA CHAPELOTTE

France > Grand Est > Meurthe-et-Moselle > 54480 > Saint-Sauveur > Lieu-dit Norroy #### Départ de la Maison de la Forêt

The Col de la Chapelotte offers an excellent opportunity to discover a mountain battlefield. The front was frozen there at the beginning of March 1915 for almost 50 months! Given the profile of the terrain and the density of the works, all offensives would have been extremely costly and would have required means that both armies did not have. The proximity of the lines (15 to 20 mothers in two points), led to a 30 months underground war. It required the concentration of more and more important technical means. The Vosges sandstone was crushed by 55 underground explosions on a 300 meter front, the last one having taken place at a depth of nearly 75 meters. The association Guerre en Vosges offers guided tours of the Col de la Chapelotte, as well as a visit to the Centre d'interprétation et de Documentation de La Ménelle.
