CHAPELLE ET SOURCE DE MONTEGOUTTE

On a certain day from a time so remote that the date has been lost, one of the lumberjacks who worked in the place where the chapel stands found in the heart of a fir tree that he had just felled a statue of the Blessed Virgin. He appropriated it and took it home with him. What a surprise when he discovered the next morning that the Virgin had disappeared! During that night, his wife and daughter went blind. In his turmoil, the woodcutter hurriedly returned to the forest and found the statuette in its original place At his feet, a hitherto unknown spring had appeared Thinking then that he had been blinded by selfishness in wanting the statue for himself alone, he guides his wife and daughters to the feet of the Virgin. They then wash their eyes with the water from the new spring and immediately regained their sight! They then run from the surroundings to venerate the Virgin and wash themselves with clear water. The woodcutter himself raised the chapel and placed the statue in a bark niche as a reminder of where it was found.
