JEAN BAZAINE : MOSAIQUE ET VITRAUX

Facing the Tower, Jean Bazaine's mosaic called "The Flight of Liberty" evokes the fight and victory of Liberty. Its warm-coloured wings match the large wings of the Tower of Liberty. This mosaic, created in 1999, also echoes other works by this master of lyrical abstraction, which can be seen in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. The most striking element of these creations is the stained glass windows of the cathedral. The 53 stained-glass windows were created in 1886-1987 by a group of 10 artists, including Jean Bazaine, who coordinated the project. The general theme of this unique ensemble in Europe is "Death and Resurrection" (read the "the cathedral" sheet). A painting by Jean Bazaine can also be seen in the Fine Arts Gallery of the Pierre-Noël Museum.
