FORÊT DOMANIALE DE SAINT-AVOLD

It is the only forest massif in Lorraine that benefits from the status of protection forest. Considered as the green lung of the Lorraine coal basin, it has undergone a lot of deforestation since the beginning of the industrial era and until the 1980s. The Departmental Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the ONF decided to safeguard part of the remaining forests, which were a vital part of the living environment of the inhabitants of the coal basin. In 1989, 3,302 ha were classified as protection forest, to stop the deforestation of this beautiful massif.
